Lowry Avenue Bridge
3 separate bridges have spanned the Mississippi River at this crossing in
Minneapolis, Minnesota since 1887. The most recent, Bridge 2723, is a
889 foot long, 57 foot wide steel truss through deck bridge that carries 2
lanes of traffic 33 feet above the Mississippi River and was opened to
traffic in 1958. During bridge painting in 2005 it was discovered that Pier
3 had rotated 11 inches out of vertical alignment but it was determined
that the structure had stabilized and would not move any further.
However, in early 2008 the pier had shifted another 2 inches and on April
25, 2008 the Lowry Avenue Bridge was closed forever.
Carl Bolander and Sons was assigned the task of demolition and removal
of the bridge with Advanced Explosives Demolition (AED) handling the
implosion.
