 Xcel Energy High Bridge Plant




Xcel Energy's High Bridge power plant was built in 1923 and, together
with a sister plant in Minneapolis, once formed the hub of Northern States
Power Company (a predecessor to Xcel Energy).  Unique to High Bridge
were substation controls that could distribute power directly to the city
of Saint Paul.  The two original units began service in 1924 with two more
units, twice the size of the first two, added in 1942 and 1944. Units 5 and
6, which were larger yet, began operating in 1956 and 1959.  When the
four oldest units were retired from service, two of the boilers were kept
and provided process steam to a Saint Paul paper manufacturer through
a 5-mile steam line constructed in 1983.  In 2008 the 480-665 MW High
Bridge MERP project, a natural gas-fired combined-cycle unit, came online
and replaced the aging 271 MW coal-powered facility.

The largest demolition firm in the United States, Brandenburg Industrial
Service Company, was awarded the decommissioning contract from Xcel
Energy.  Brandenburg, established in 1968, will be completing
environmental abatement, structural demolition (including the 570-foot
tall stack) and soil remediation.  The project is scheduled to be completed
in the fall of 2010.
