U of M Science Classroom Building
The Science Classroom Building on the Minneapolis campus of the
University of Minnesota was constructed in 1962. The 3 story building
housed classrooms, 4 large lecture halls, chemistry demonstration facilities
and study areas. A widely held rumor says the building was originally built
as a bomb shelter for students and staff during the Cold War, but the
University has never verified the truth of the story. Veit Companies,
founded in 1928 and headquartered in Rogers, Minnesota, was selected
to complete hazardous materials abatement and structural demolition.
Due to the proximity of classroom buildings and a museum, Veit will use
hydraulic demolition techniques instead of a crane and wrecking ball
combination to limit noise and vibration impacts during demolition. It is
estimated that atleast 85% of the materials from the structure will be
recycled.
The Science Classroom Building is being demolished to make way for the
new 115,000 square foot, 6 story Science Teaching and Student Services
Center (ST&SS). Including demolition, the project cost is $72.5 million
and will be completed in time for fall 2010 classes.
