In 1968, mechanical snow grooming was still in its infancy.  The world’s
first images of mechanical snow grooming were shown on TV in 1960
and were of track driven army vehicles preparing for the VIII Winter
Olympics in Squaw Valley.  Karl Kässbohrer, Germany's largest producer
of busses and truck trailers at the time, while on a ski vacation came up
with the idea for PistenBully. Kässbohrer commissioned Walter Haug, their
lead design engineer, to develop a purpose built snow groomer.  Haug
first put pen to paper in June 1968, and since then has been considered
the "father" of the PistenBully. 

The prototype PistenBully featured hydrostatic drive, a steering wheel,
spacious cab and large deck. The first small series production
began in 1969 with the first PistenBully, the 120 horsepower 32.120B,
hitting the slopes in 1971.  The 145D, featuring a turbo charged diesel
engine, followed soon thereafter. Later that same year the 170D was
released with a tiltable driver’s cab that embodied the now familiar "round
face".  The international market breakthrough came in 1972 at the XI
Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, where PistenBully took charge of
slope grooming and by 1979 over 2,000 vehicles were in operation in 35
countries.  The first decade also saw innovations added to the product
line such as a compactor bar, a front mount blade, a track setter for
cross-country skiing and a tiller.  Other firsts was an analog computer for
drive control on the 170D and pilot controlled hydraulics on the 240D.
Today the 490 horsepower PistenBully 600W Polar, the current the
flagship of the product line, features CAN Bus, digital electronics and
smart valves.  

Today there have been over 17,000 vehicles delivered and PistenBully's
can be found operating in 66 countries and all six continents including
Antarctica.  The introduction of new models throughout the years has
kept PistenBully the worlds market leader in ski slope and trail grooming
vehicles.
