Interstate 35W Bridge
Shortly after 6 in the evening on August 1, 2007, bridge 9340 collapsed
in Minneapolis, Minnesota killing 13 and injuring 145. Construction of the
8 span, 1,907 foot long,113 foot wide bridge began in 1964 and was
opened to traffic in 1967. The total cost of the project was $5.3 million.
The 4 span replacement bridge is 1,223 feet long and 189 feet wide to
support 10 lanes of traffic with accommodations for a future light rail
transit line.
If you look at the raw numbers, in 339 days a total of 48,700 cubic yards
of concrete was poured around 8,500 tons of reinforcing steel to build
the 330 foot, 504 foot, 242 foot and 147 foot spans. Throughout the
entire project 11,085,000 pounds of reinforcing steel were used and
along with 1000 miles of tensioning cables, they will hold the whole
structure together for a minimum of 100 years.
But the new 9340 not only has muscle, it also has brains and beauty.
323 sensors embedded in the structure will measure and document the
health of the bridge 24 hours a day. They track the lateral movement,
stress points and any unusual bending in the bridge with the data being
transmitted and viewed real-time by MNDoT and the University of
Minnesota. When the bridge forsees icy road conditions, the anti-icing
system will spray a solution through a series of application disks to
eliminate ice buildup on the bridge deck and keep the traffic lanes open
and safe. While at night, an aesthetic lighting system made up of 300
light emitting diodes are able to project every color in the spectrum onto
the bridge’s briliant "snowbound white" surface.
The team of Flatiron Constructors Incorporated, an independent
subsidiary of HOCHTIEF Americas division, and Manson Construction
Company were selected to build the $233.8 million replacement bridge.
Carl Bolander and Sons was awarded the $15 million demolition and debris
removal contract. The projects scheduled completion date was to be
December 24, 2008. They finished on September 14, 2008...98 days
ahead of schedule.
It was an amazing 47 weeks to witness. To everyone involved it can not
be said enough, congratulations on a job well done. A job very well done.
