Interstate 35W Paving
Ideker Incorporated, headquartered in Saint Joseph, Missouri, was
contracted to pave a stretch of Interstate 35W from Bloomington to
Burnsville, Minnesota with Nova Chip. Ideker brought in a technically
unique and rarely seen Roadtec SP200 to lay the pavement. Their unit
was the 4th SP200 built of the 11 on the planet.
Nova Chip is an ultra thin, hot mix wearing course placed over an existing
asphalt surface to provide pavement preservation. The paving process
starts with the SP200 spraying a layer of polymer asphalt emulsion over
the existing pavement. Within inches of the spraying the Nova Chip is
applied and can be placed as thin as 0.5 inches and as thick a 1.5 inches.
The asphalt emulsion cools quickly and bonds the wear course to the
pavement. Requiring no more than 2 compaction passes, the newly
paved surface can be reopened to traffic within 300 feet of the completed
compaction. Because this is a single pass process and requires no milling,
the costs are low and road closure delays are minimized.
On this project, when the crew from Ideker hit their stride, they placed a
1 inch layer of Nova Chip at a rate of 175 feet per minute.
