Hibbing Taconite
Hibbing Taconite is the largest operating open pit iron ore mine in the
world and was the first open pit mine on the Mesabi Iron Range. The mine
is more than 6 miles long, 1.5 miles wide and 535 feet deep. Since 1895
more than 1.4 billion tons of earth have been removed on its 3,085 acres
of land, and more than 800 million gross tons of iron ore have been
shipped from the mine. At peak production in the 1940's, as much as 1/4
of the ore mined in the United States came from this mine located in
Hibbing, Minnesota.
The Hibbing Taconite mine is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., Mittal Steel
and Stelco Inc.
