Wood River Refinery Column




Taylors Heavy Haul, based in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, was tasked with
transporting a refinery column manufactured at Aarow Tank and
Engineering in Cambridge, Minnesota to the Wood River Refinery
(EnCana/ConocoPhillips) in Roxana, Illinois.  The 900 mile journey took 8
days at an average speed of 20 miles per hour.  Due to the size of the
column only 70 miles of the route was over the interstate highway
system.  The refinery column was transported using an expandable 16
axel dual lane suspension beam trailer with Talbert running gear and
custom fabricated suspension beams.  Each of the 2 beams weigh 40,000
pounds alone and it takes a total of 5 standard sized semi trucks to
transport the disassembled trailer between projects. 3 for the suspension
beams and 1 for each dolly.  The assembled trailer had a width of 20 feet,
a length of 230 feet and a total height of 15 feet 6 inches.  A 550
horsepower Caterpillar ACERT powered Kenworth T800H provided the
pulling power for the move.  All together, the trailer, refinery column and
tractor weighed in the neighborhood of 350,000 pounds.
